How Global Positioning Technology Changes Emergency Response

April 18th, 2010 -- Posted in Health | No Comments »

There’s no doubt that we all love our GPS (Global Positioning Systems). No longer must we print maps and directions from Mapquest, and then try to read them while we drive. But, have you ever considered how these ingenious little devices have revolutionized emergency response?

During an emergency, a responder knowing exactly where the patient is located can mean the difference between life and death. Just like we’re not searching around for that trendy new restaurant anymore, ambulance drivers are not searching for accident or heart attack victims anymore either. There are three primary ways Global Positioning Systems are helping emergency responders get to patients faster.

1. Patients call 911 on Smartphones. Smartphones are equipped with GPS, so accident victims don’t have to describe where they are to 911 dispatchers. As soon as they place the call, the 911 dispatcher knows exactly where to send the emergency crew. Installed vehicle programs like OnStar are even better, since the OnStar personnel will handle placing the 911 call when the victim can’t do so himself. OnStar acts as GPS and dials 911, too.

2. Emergency Drivers use GPS to locate addresses. When ambulance and other first responder vehicles are equipped with GPS, drivers can simply enter the address of the home or business they’re trying to find and let the GPS take them there. This speeds up the amount of time it takes to get to the victim and eliminates drivers showing up at the wrong address or driving around the block two or three times because houses aren’t properly marked.

3. 911 Dispatcher us GPS to determine which emergency unit to dispatch. Because the dispatcher can see exactly where each of their on-call vehicles is located, they can dispatch the one located closest to the site of the victim. This saves precious time in getting to the scene.

These technologies are available today, and are used by most emergency teams in orchestrating responses to emergencies. However, more is coming. GIS (Geographic Information Systems) are big news right now. They will likely be integrated with GPS systems in the future, allowing even greater flexibility in emergency response. GIS systems, simply put, is a system for managing data in its locational context. Typically a GIS is a computer-based system for gathering, storing, organizing, and distributing location-based information.
GIS will be probably most helpful in locating missing persons, rather than finding people whose location is already known. For example, if a child wanders away from home, the person leading the search can use

GIS to both help pinpoint the best search area by loading in information such as where the child was last seen and what direction he was likely heading. They can also use it to keep track of searchers and log in clues and information they might find. This creates a database of information that can be compiled to help keep the search heading in the right direction, so that the missing child is located more quickly and less time is wasted looking in the wrong places. GIS and GPS, when integrated together, offer many great possibilities.
The field of emergency response has already been greatly changed by GPS. As time goes on, expect GPS and GIS to have an even greater impact on the emergency response industry.
